CAN you believe that 2006 is done and dusted, already? Many people will have New Year's resolutions that will be trashed and/or forgotten by January 15. We all end each year with the best intentions, but I have an idea that can help us all to set realistic goals and objectives for 2007, and, actually achieve them.
We'll come back to this, after we visit the Top 20. Holding at number one is Come Around by Bermudian Collie Budz, one of the hottest reggae tracks in the world. I'm still waiting for his CD.
Some people say it has been released; others say it hasn't. Come on Collie, where's the CD my friend? Way up to number two is My Love by Justin Timberlake featuring T.
I., a former essential new tune. Justin Timberlake has changed his image a little.
I guess it is part of everyone's evolution as we mature, but he almost appears to have a slightly thuggish appeal in his videos. Well, whatever ..
. Now for the latest Bad Boy effort. Jumping up to number three is the new one from Diddy and Nicole Scherzinger, entitled Come To Me.
This song has an amazing and punchy beat that makes you want to dance. It's a strong hip hop song, typical of Puffy (sorry, he doesn't wish to be called that any more) This brings me to another one of the things that make me smile and say, "Whatever". It is the tendancy of people who think they are so very important that the world should care about what they wish to rechristian themselves.
For instance, most Brazilian football (soccer for the uninformed) or other sports stars have adopted the tendancy to call themselves by only one name, dropping either their Christian or surname, whichever is less cool. For instance, we have had Pele, Zico, Rhonaldinho, Socrates, Juninho, Junior, and now there is a soccer player called Fred. I thought at first that this was a phenomenon for only football players, who most Brazilians consider heroes, but then I realised that there's a Brazilian playing in the NBA, who a few years ago, insisted they drop his last name, Hilario, and simply call him "Nene".
This is hysterical when you think about it. What an offense to your parents and family, but I guess that's just me, showing my old age again. DJLT, the old fogey.
It doesn't sound right or seem to match, but when you can't read menus at night, in the dark, with your contact lenses in, you're getting old. But, as usual, I digress. Falling to number four is Beyonce with her hit Ring The Alarm, featuring Bermudian reggae artist Collie Buddz.
On the way down at number five is Jay Z's latest hit, Show Me What You Got. Jay Z and his cutie, Beyonce, really rule hip hop these days. Slipping to number six is Madonna, with her latest hit Jump.
I'm looking forward to the next single from her CD to be released, as well as her next CD, which she should be looking to release in 2008. But, then, I'm not her manager. At number seven is Shortie Like Mine from Bow Wow, while Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake holds back at number eight.
Changing the pace to dance music, the way up at number nine is Love's The Only Drug, by Ultra Nate. A former essential new joint, Irreplaceable by Beyonce, climbs to number 10. Advancing to number 11 is Lost Without You by Robin Thicke.
This one is popular on local radio. Up to number 12 is Ruben Studdard with his recent hit Change Me. Down to number 13 is Maneater by Nelly Furtado, which continues to do well in clubs that play house music.
I went to Square One and the Deep last weekend and found them relatively quiet with the busy hot spots in Bermuda now appearing to be Splash and Docksiders. Again, whatever ..
. an old guy like me isn't exactly a frequent habitue of any of these places! Falling to number 14 is Say Goodbye by teenage heartthrob Chris Brown, who all the young ladies adore.
Falling to number 15 is Take Me As I Am by Mary J. Blige, still the Queen of R B. Down to number 16 is Get Up by Ciara featuring Chamillionaire.
Slipping into the number 17 spot this week is Money Maker, a hot and catchy hip hop joint from Ludacris and Pharrell.
