I got an e-mail a few minutes ago from the guy who does booking for and , the bands I over the weekend. writes:
so the guys in PPR and the owner of the club agreed that they should take it easy, so as not run everybody off. So they whipped up some covers and instrumentals so the audience would stick around.I suppose that explains, but to me does not excuse, the disjointed nature of their set. I mean, why pitch a band for a venue that you think is unsuited for their trademark sound? We wanted people to see PERFO too. The plan was for Perfo to play first , then for PPR to launch into their full-on attack on the audience but PERFO was late to show up. Plus with the owner being so nice in his request for them to not play bowl of s*** and p*** in your p**** [asterisks mine -ML], and other songs of this nature, PPR agreed.
I've seen PPR numerous times and of course have their CD, and believe me they are a RAUCOUS PUNK band to the core, it just wasn't their type of venue for them to play their usual set.
Sounds a little fishy to me. Does anyone else who was there care to chime in?
Posted by Maggie on January 10, 2006 at 04:13 PM | I was going through my e-mail box the other day and noticed one from a month ago that I had meant to respond to.
D'oh! It was from local boutique owner Trevor Dickson, whose shop is in downtown Macon. Then I ran into Trevor at on Saturday.
Double d'oh. Basically, Trevor is interested in stocking music by local artists. So if you've got a few copies of your lo-fi masterpiece kicking around, call Trevor at 478-745-1886 or e-mail him at .
In other news, if anyone knows a photographer willing to work for cheap free, please e-mail me at . Or else I'll foist my Digital Elph skillz on y'all.
Posted by Maggie on October 24, 2005 at 01:04 PM | I've already gotten a few responses to my query for the last 10 songs you listened to and I'll post them now.
I'd put mine down, but since I have to listen to music for work-related purposes I don't think it would really work all that well. Sometimes I'm trying to familiarize myself with an artist before I interview them, sometimes just listening to a random CD I got in the mail, and sometimes listening to my iPod to help me focus on my writing.
First up we have a cover-heavy listing from newbie Ron White, complete with commentary:
1.
Stupid Girl - Garbage
2. Paint it Black - Johnny Lang (weak Stones cover)
3. Country Boy Can Survive - Kid Rock (weaker Hank Williams Jr.
cover)
4. Snowden - Kill the Power
5. The Luxury Kings - Cryin' Why
6.
With or Without You - Keane (well done U2 cover)
7. One - Johnny Cash (awesome U2 cover)
8. Sympathy for the Devil - Guns n' Roses (OK but I'd much rather hear the Stones or Jane's Addiction)
9.
Pretty Vegas - J.D. Fortune from the INXS Rock Star show
10.
Tiny Dancer - Dave Grohl (cool and funny tribute to Cameron Crowe)
decided to color outside the lines and send me like top ten things going on with me and music is always involved. Creative types, what can you do? At least he put the record label on there and added a bonus warning about song number 10.
1. Outlines - Just A Little Loving (Sonarkollectiv)
2. Little Brother - Lovin' It feat.
Joe Scudda (ABB Records)
3. Sergio Mendes Brasil 66 - Wichita Lineman (A M Records)
4. Dr.
John - Mos' Scocious (ATCO)
5. Soho - Hot (Cabaret)
6. Juan Hoerni - Afrique (Cha Cha Project Recordings)
7.
David Axelrod - Songs From Experience (Columbia)
8. Ira Sullivan - Strings Attached (PAUSA)
9. Van Morrison - The Best of Van Morrison (Mercury)
10.
The Care Bears - Care Bears Breakdance Rap (Kid Stuff Records)
Ok. Look. That Care Bears song. One more thing: I'm hoping next week that my coworker Grant Blankenship will be adding his podcasts to this space. We just need to get a few technical issues worked out first. This is in no way an endorsement for that song. You asked what we've been playing lately and that is a song that I keep playing. The song is terrible.
I bought a Care Bears birthday album at a thrift store recently because I saw that song title on it. I got home and the song was awful. But people come by my house and raise an eyebrow as to why I have it.
I show them the title Care Bears Breakdance Rap and they want to hear it. I play it. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS SONG!
IT WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES!
It's called Singles Going Steady and Grant will assemble a playlist of free, legal music downloads and commentary. I already listened to the first show and it's pretty sweet. So let's invoke all the technology deities to make this work, shall we?
Posted by Maggie on September 23, 2005 at 05:45 PM | For those of you that don't regularly read the main site, today I had a about a recent rash of cancellations at . I've already gotten a few e-mails on the subject and with permission, have decided to post one. Mike Roberts is the general manager of two urban radio stations in town, Foxie 107 and Majic 100.
I was excited to read your article on Macon concerts today. This is a pet peeve of mine. I really want to see this market turn around.
However, there are a number of things that must happen, including changing the mindset of Macon ticket buyers. I would have welcomed an opportunity to talk to you about this. If you ever write about this topic again, here are some of my thoughts:
-Events must be promoted at least ONE MONTH in advance.
-Tickets over $20-$25 are a tough sell in Macon.
-Artist must do a ton of interviews to overcome the perception of no-shows. (This is a big problem for urban shows.
People wait to buy tickets because they have been burned many times in the past.)
-R B/Hip-Hop acts must buy the ENTIRE market. There have been no successful shows in this market in recent years that were promoted on only one or two stations.
There are FIVE urban stations that matter in Macon.
-Avoid outdoor venues and holiday weekends. Memorial Day weekend seems to be the only holiday weekend that always works.
-Arrange events around payday.
-Most of all, promoters must be honest. If we tell them it won't work in Macon, they have to believe us!
Thanks again for addressing this issue. I really hope it gets better. Feel free to call me in the future.
Have a great weekend.
Mike's definitely got some good points. What do y'all think?
