I grew up travelling across the country with my parents and had been exposed to historic monuments even before I was 10.
Architecture and history were a part of childhood memories. I grew up in south Delhi with monuments of Mehrauli right next door. I remember spending a lot of time discovering ruins along this archeological park.
So, architecture, conservation and subsequently writing on historic architecture was a natural progression.
I was always interested in history and that perhaps is the reason I gravitated to historic preservation as a subject, even after specialising in architecture. For a conservation architect, delving into the history of the project or building is integral to the conservation process, so in a way, these fields are quite inter-dependent.
The fact that most of its institutions and heritage buildings were built not by kings but by generous partnership or philanthropy of its citizens...
