Christmas cheer was spread by the Barbados Postal Service as the winners in the 2006 Letter Writing Competition were awarded their prizes. In a short presentation ceremony which was held last month, and held in the Conference Room of the General Post Office, Ivanna Bascombe was announced the winner. Now a student at Harrison College, at the time of her entry, she was attending Erdiston Primary School, which also boasts of having the 2005 winner.
Olivia Alleyne, no stranger to winning competitions with the General Post Office, impressed another set of judges with her writing skills to emerge winner of the second prize. She was also an award winner in the 2005 competition and placed in the Postal Code Cartoon Competition, which was held last February. The third prize was won by Amelie Buxton of St.
Winifreds School, which was one of the schools in winners row last year. Harriette Daisley, Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO, was the guest speaker and presented the prizes. Postmaster General, Joel Brathwaite, was also on hand to commend the efforts of the young letter writers.
The winners received trophies sponsored by the Barbados Postal Service and one thousand dollars in Cave Shepherd cash, sponsored by the Barbados Public Workers Co-operative Credit Union, was shared among the three prize winners. Other prizes included book/ stationery vouchers redeemable at Pages Bookstores, sponsored by the Pine Hill Dairy and the Barbados Postal Service; as well as a Right Start Account from the Barbados National Bank, which was won by Bascombe, and a C.O.
