Goshen Two witnesses picked accused killer-for-hire Melvin Green out of a lineup at the Orange County Jail yesterday, Green's lawyer said, and a grand jury could indict him as early as today.
Green, 36, of the Bronx, is accused of shooting Fermina Nunez to death on Saturday night at Final Touch by Fermina, the unisex salon she owned on Wickham Avenue in Middletown.
City police say that the shooting was a contract hit, orchestrated by Nunez's on-again, off-again boyfriend, Patrick Bowie, after Nunez tried to end the relationship.
Green appeared briefly yesterday in Orange County Court but wasn't called upon to say anything. Judge Jeffrey G. Berry granted Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Milza's request for a lineup, after the prosecutor said that a witness had already picked Green's picture out of an array of six police photos.
Green's lawyer, Dennis McCormick of the Orange County Legal Aid Society, was present when the lineup was conducted and confirmed that two witnesses identified Green. McCormick spoke with Green after court but declined to discuss those conversations.
As Nunez was buried at Hillside Cemetery in Middletown yesterday, city police were scouring Green's car for evidence, after having it towed from the Bronx and obtaining a search warrant.
They've also recovered a .38 caliber handgun that's believed to be the weapon that Green used against Nunez.
A grand jury will hear testimony in the case today, prosecutors said in court papers.
Bowie and Green are both charged with first-degree murder.
Bowie is recovering from self-inflicted knife wounds at Westchester Medical Center, and prosecutors said it's unclear when he'll make his first public court appearance.
