-How to Party /or Network with Hollywood Movers and Shakers-
According to Skip Press, the accomplished screenwriter,:
"certain activities that are open to the public will allow you to mix with Hollywood movers and shakers..
.
- The main organization that just about everyone in Hollywood wants to belong to is the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. By simply surfing to and clicking on Events you'll find a place to sign up to be automatically notified via email of current events, public programs, and events of the Academy Foundation that include 'film-related exhibitions, screenings, lectures and seminars, and the Student Academy Awards, among other activities.
' Who could you meet at such events? Just about anyone. Remember, most movie stars, directors, and producers are film fans, too.
- Similarly, by...
(clicking on this site) and clicking on Events, you can sign up for email updates on activities at the Academy of Television Arts Sciences in North Hollywood. These events include 'behind-the-scenes evenings with the most popular and acclaimed shows currently on the air, as well as workshops and seminars on employment, career, ad social issues, and conferences on emerging technologies and information systems.' .
..
- (If you are a writer, screenwriter, or just want to network with other screenwriters) The organization most screenwriters aspire to join is the Writers Guild of America, west.
..They put on events like the 'Writers on Writing' seminar series.
.. The series showcases an outstanding motion picture or television writer each month discussing how their careers have developed, their approach to their craft, and so forth, with each interview followed by a question-and-answer period.
Most of these events are open to the public...
For more information see the Web site...
or call (323)782-4692.
- There are public venues unique to Hollywood that support and celebrate the business and offer people an opportunity to meet like-minded people, successful or pre-successful. ( Press lists Arc Light as an example of this kind of venue.
)...
-In general, the main 'bible' of happenings in Los Angeles is published every week in ...
(this) free newspaper...
- Lastly, since any club is only as successful as its ability to attract and keep patrons, it hires producers to get the public to their venues...

I strongly recommend Skip Press's book,: "The Ultimate Writer's Guide to Hollywood", which I used as a source for the networking portion of this post. If you are a screenwriter (or aspire to be one) or even a filmmaker, do yourself a favor and get this book. Personally, I have this bad habit of highlighting things that I find important in books.
I ended up highlighting most of this man's book. That's how good I thought his book was. Also, his web site can be found at:

- Please check this link out if you are interested in finding out about The 2006 PAGE International Screenwriting Awards. On this site, the following information is given:
"The PAGE Awards were established by an alliance of Hollywood producers, agents, and development executives. Our goal : to discover the most exciting new screenplays by up-and-coming writers from across the country and around the world.
..
It's a Catch 22.
While producers and agents continually complain that they can't find good material, talented writers who live outside Los Angeles and have no 'connections' within the industry find it virtually impossible to penetrate the barriers of the Hollywood system. Our objective is to bridge that gap - giving new screenwriters the opportunity to get their scripts into the hands of industry professionals- and also serving as a much-needed resource for Hollywood producers, agents, and development execs who are searching for quality material.
.
..(W)e encourage writers to submit scripts of every genre, and we present awards in nine different categories.
Not only do our winning writers receive over $25,000 in cash and prizes, but most importantly, all contestants have the opportunity to get their scripts read by Hollywood professionals who are currently in search of new talent."

(and their other link: -this link is helpful if you don't have an agent.
-)
-This site (from Kevin Spacey) is a way to gain feedback and exposure for your script.
- According to the breakingin.net site, this site has the most comprehensive listing of Screenwriting Competitions.
After relying on many of their listings myself, I have to agree with them. This site even has report cards on each of the competitions.
- Use this site to find out (instantly) which stories and scripts have sold, who sold them, and who bought them.
The site also has a huge list of competitions; and much more.
- This is another great site that lists everything about scripts that are sold.
-This site provides great lists of active independent producers, as well as important advice for screenwriters, and extraordinary links.
- Much like the last site, this site will help screenwriters find active independent producers for their scripts. This site also features competitions, a contact list, and much more.
- This extensive listing of events (that is provided by Production Hub-the search engine for production-) is indispensible for screenwriters (especially those interested in finding out about prizes, competitions, awards, and prizes).
Additionally, there are events listed that are pertinent to filmmakers.
In Skip Press's phenomenal book, The Ultimate Screenwriter's Guide to Hollywood, he gives one other piece of advice that I would like to use as a segue to my next section. He advises his readers to branch out into filmmaking, rather than just becoming screenwriters.
He cites several reasons to consider doing this:
1." Have you been frustrated in trying to sell a screenplay? Getting yourself on the talent radar screen of Hollywood might ultimately mean making your own movie.
The majority of the finalists at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 were films made by people who had seen their scripts repeatedly turned down in the Hollywood development process. The director of the festival made a point of this when first talking with the press about the chosen few. In our digital age, movies don't have to be expensive.
"
And he backs this last claim up by directing his readers to free and inexpensive tools (especially software) that can be used in fimmaking. I think that fimmakers ( in addition to screenwriters) can learn almost everything they need to know by reading this book.
2.
"As a screenwriter, you need to focus on your own strengths and hew to them vigorously. Every producer's assistant , when pressed for what the producer is really looking for, will say, 'An original voice'. But guess what?
They get more excited watching movies than they do reading scripts"
3."Your original voice,..
. is a pristine domain where no one may trespass. If you are certain of it, if you display clarity and distinctive style, that voice can transform people's lives.
Most screen(plays)...
are rewritten. If you make a movie from your script, though, you can preserve your voice."
4.
He cites examples of how films were put on sites such as and got millions of people to watch them. He tells his readers that this will really grab the attention of Hollywood.
5.
"What if you shot a truly great screenplay from a script you wrote, and sent someone an email with a Web site link for watching it? Put yourself in an executive's shoes. Which would you rather do, read a few pages, or see actors on a screen?
"
6."It became clear to me that people who make movies (as opposed to writers) get most of Hollywood's attention."
7.
"If you're only a screenwriter, you can make a nice living. Until you become a filmmaker, however, you won't fully understand how movies work..
. then there's editing, which teaches story flow in a way that no sceenwriting class can match..
. You don't learn editing by reading about it. You have to do it to see how scenes cut together or don't.
Believe me, your screenwriting will change. You can lie to yourself about your screenplay, but not what you see on film."
He goes on to give other reasons; however, based on these exerpts that are included here, I hope that I have convinced screenwriters to atleast consider the following competitions:
-Here is the opportunity of a life time sponsored by FX.
Here are the details that are posted on this site for their "Sunny, Funny, Money $50,000 Competition":
"Your comedy could be on FX.1.Submit your short 2.
Watch and vote 3.Tune-in see who gets $50,000. Got a great idea for a comedy?
Then FX wants to see it. Whether it's stand-up or a sitcom, or just a funny bit..
. Make it in 5 minutes or less and you could get a $50,000 production budget to turn it into your very own pilot. Once your pilot is made you'll have the chance to pitch it to FX and Premiere it right here on My Space.
Submit by June 12th. On June 19th we will reveal out 20 semi-finalists on this page. You and everyone you know can check out the videos and vote for your favorite.
The comedy that gets the $50k will be revealed during the souble-episode Premiere of it's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, June 29th at 10p on FX."
- This site has information about the Action/Cut Short Film Competition. According to the site,
"there will be over 125 industry prizes valued at $50,000 in Hollywood career access meetings, cash, and sponsored industry prizes, including the coveted Panavision Prize Awards.
The annual call for entries will go until June 1, 2006."
-Here is the web site for the Project.Tv's Student Film Contest.
The following details about the competition can be found ont the site:
"Will you become America's favorite short film producer and win $25,000 in the process? ( 1st prize=$25,000; 2nd prize= $10,000; and 3rd place=$5,000.) Simply submit 3 short film episodes of less than 3 minutes each and if your film gets the most votes in the final round, you win!
...

S."
The full set of rules is available on this site.

Furthermore, there is also an "Outstanding Animation Award" that has a cash award of $2,000 plus industry gifts and certificates. The winner in this category is also eligible to win the grand prize. This is how this competition distinguishes itself from other competitions:
"We aren't looking for run-of-the mill Hollywood fare.

- This is the MTR(Museum of Television Radio) Doc Fest site for their Documentary Pitch Fest Workshop. The following explanation of the event can be found on their site:
"In this pitch workshop/competition .
.., a panel of television executives and producers will discuss the process of developing a documentary and will hear and evaluate the pitches from documentary filmmakers who are hoping to sell either a nonfiction concept or a documentary work-in-progress.
..
