I m sure I m behind on this one a bit, but I read a story today on MSN titled and I have to tell ya, I m more than a bit appalled. It seems that there is some interest in using genetic screening to help parents with disabilities to give birth to children with the same abnormality.
WTF?

?
The gist is parents who are deaf or perhaps dwarfs could screen the embryos to make sure their child has the same traits as they have. That might be OK when you are talking eye color or whether little Johnny gets your ears or your spouses, but your lack of hearing?

?? That s insane and I don t care how politically insensitive it is to say it.

1. Smoking can shorten your penis by as much as a centimeter. Erections are all about good bloodflow, and lighting up calcifies blood vessels, stifling erectile circulation.

So even if you don t care all that much about your lungs or dying young, spare the li l guy.
2. Doctors can now grow skin for burn victims using the foreskins of circumcised infants.

One foreskin can produce 23,000 square meters, which would be enough to tarp every Major League infield with human flesh.
3. An enlarged prostate gland can cause both erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

If you have an unexplained case of either, your doctor s looking forward to checking your prostate. Even if you re not.

10 years ago, California voters approved California s Compassionate Use Act, approved by 56 percent of voters of this state.

It says that seriously ill people who have a doctor s recommendation, either written or verbal, can use marijuana to ease their pain and suffering. This law approves the use, sale and growth of cannabis for individuals. The Compassionate Use Act was formerly known as Proposition 215.

Last week, should be pre-empted by federal law because federal law is supreme. Nevitt also ruled that in some cases, state s laws are supreme over federal law.
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has decided to appeal the ruling.

Their basis for throwing more money at this issue is this:
The Bush Administration, in their never-ending battle to fight against good science, a clean and diverse environment, and other assorted evil-doers, is considering doing away with national health standards that cut lead from gasoline, a feat widely regarded as one of the nation s most successful clean-air accomplishments. Because, well, who really cares about people anyway?
Bowing to pressure from the sadly misunderstood corporate creators of lead products (battery makers, lead smelters, and gasoline refiners), a preliminary staff report from the EPA acknowledged a consideration to drop the health standards for lead air pollution.

Saying that significantly changed circumstances justify , something in effect for 30 years now. The EPA notes that levels of lead in the atmosphere have dropped nearly 90% since the ban went into effect in 1976, ergo, now that the air is mostly lead free, we can start building up lead levels again.
This is just another classic Bush Administration idiot move to benefit corporations over the health of American citizens.

Exposure to lead has been linked to numerous health issues, including being a leading cause of nerve damage, especially in children.
Don t shoot the messenger ladies, the fact remains that . After all, millions of years of evolution can not be undone in the course of a couple of generations.

While today females can enjoy an independent existence unlike any other time in history (all right, maybe Spartan women had it a bit better), women still look for men with higher social status to date and marry while men, the pigs that we still are, tend to focus on youth and beauty. Even though most married women in Western Culture could easily survive alone, they collectively fear being abandoned. It s like I ve always said, we are nothing more than biomechanical machines who only believe we have control of our impulses; between ones genetics and environment, we do as we must
Women are terrified of abandonment.

They fear a drop in status or social standing that might come with divorce in a way men - who are driven by very different priorities - simply don t understand.
Even extremely wealthy, successful women have these vestigial anxieties which bear absolutely no relation to the reality of their lives, but are throwbacks to caveman society. My wife and I just saw the film Jesus Camp, and it is truly surreal and scary.
