Six Utah County students are among 33 Utah recipients of scholarships through the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program: Shannon Babb of Highland; Brooke C. Lasky of Highland; Trevor L. McIntosh of Lindon; Noelle L.
Pitcher of Orem; Andrea A.Melton of Orem; and Cami E. Brimhall of Provo.
Each of the seniors received $1,000. The Comcast Foundation recognizes high school seniors for their leadership skills, positive attitudes, academic achievements and community service activities.
The Alpine Community Arts Council and Alpine Community Theater will sponsor "Gathering in the Gazebo" and "The Music Man Ice Cream Social" on Friday.
This event will be held at 6 p.m. at the Legacy Park, at Main Street and Center Street.
There will be a free concert at 7 p.m. and all-you-can-eat ice cream sundaes for $1.
Entertainment will be presented by the stars of "The Music Man."
Tanya Preston of American Fork was one of 19 selected to receive 2006 student research fellowships from the American Association for Dental Research. A student at the Arthur A.
Dugoni School of Dentistry at University of the Pacific in San Francisco, Preston will receive $3,000 to complete her research project and present it at the annual sessions of the International Association for Dental Research and the AADR in 2007.
Her project, titled "Inhibition of Prolonged Bitter Taste: Partitioning of Bitter Tastants into Liposomes and Inhibition of their Uptake by Oral Epithelial Cells," was sponsored by Procter Gamble. "This gives me the satisfaction of knowing that I have chosen a profession that supports continual knowledge and growth with the objective of improving not only oral health but also the overall health of the public," Preston said.
The Bureau of Land Management will be thinning stands of juniper trees on BLM land south of town for the remainder of July. Following the tree-thinning project, the wood will be available to the public for fence posts and firewood, by permit only, during August and September. The Town Council will discuss a proposed ordinance to protect Fairfield's roads at a meeting on Thursday at 7 p.m.
at the Historic Fairfield Schoolhouse. The council will also consider a business license application for a composting operation. The public is invited to attend.
Highland is moving into the electronic age with the purchase of a GPS (Global Positioning System) based valve exerciser. The City Council has authorized the expenditure of $9,500 to purchase the mechanical device to open and close the more than 1,000 water valves in the city. It will replace the manual valve key and will allow the public service department to map and log the locations and status of each valve.
"This allows us to display on our system the exact location, the position of the valve and the depth of the waterline," city engineer Matt Shipp said.
Cabela's is hosting a free fishing day for children, ages 3 to 13 years, on Saturday from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. The first 500 kids will receive a free lunch and a fishing kit as well, and prizes will be given for tagged fish and the length of the fish.
There will be fish cleaning demonstrations, knot tying activities and a lure identification station. Preregistration for the event is being taken at the greeter's desk or by phone at (801) 766-2500. Preregistration does not guarantee a free fishing kit and parents must be present during the event.
Lindon residents can expect an increase in their next water bill. Water rates will increase 3.5 percent on the July 31 payment.
In order to keep up with the rising costs associated with the culinary water system, the Lindon City Council approved the increase during last week's council meeting. Sewer rates will also increase by 3.5 percent, adding a total of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons.

Moonlight Serenades will provide big band music at the free, city-sponsored concert in the park series Saturday at 7:30 p.
