Worcester Mayor Timothy P. Murray has been nominated as the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, winning a grueling and expensive race for that was seen as anybody's to win coming into today's election.
Sunburned after a day of campaigning, Murray addressed a crowd of supporters at Union Station Restaurant in his hometown before ducking into a car for Boston, where he was to planning join the celebration of his new running mate, Deval Patrick.
"I'm happy to report to you, the Patrick/Murray team is ready to rock 'n roll," Murray told supporters.
The lieutenant governor's race pitted candidates of widely divergent backgrounds -- Murray, a three-term mayor of Worcester, Goldberg, who was chairwoman of the Brookline Board of Selectmen, and Silbert, a Harwich businesswoman who cofounded the Center for Women and Enterprise.
