Gul's bikini blues

Winning rave reviews after 'Dor', actor Gul Panag reveals why she will never attempt the frivolous.
Do you feel vindicated after 'Dor'? I'm overwhelmed.

Whenever I have lived life without expectations, things turn out best for me. I have received messages even from people I don't know. My driver's friends have liked the film too!

So strong has been the buzz. I guess the climate today is right for such kind of cinema.
How much credit would you accord to director Nagesh Kukunoor?

I'm fortunate to have worked with a genius. Without Nagesh the film wouldn't have worked. He is a selfish director just as I am a selfish actor.

He would not have cast me just because I pestered him to do so. His film is too important for him to grant favours to anybody. His word for me was pathar ki lakeer.

Critical acclaim matters more to me than box-office success.
Why was your voice dubbed in the film? Sadly, I was not in town during the time Nagesh wanted me to dub.

I had a prior commitment to honour.
Why were you seen so little before 'Dor'? I did ask people for work, but they chose not to work with me.

Probably I approached the wrong people.
I'm very confident about having a great body. But I won't get into a bikini just to titillate.

Convince me about it, and then I will do it. It's about doing justice to the character.
Being Delhi-based, how do you view life in Mumbai?

Mumbai has liberated me. Living in Delhi does limit you though I am not holding a flag of feminism. Mumbai gives you a chance to prove your talent.

Of course, the minute you are seen with somebody, you get written about. So you either kill your friendship or carry on with your character being assassinated.
I'd rather wish that my work is noticed.

I don't want to dilute that attention. It's a request.
What would pull you to a man?

The sense of humour to laugh at himself and make me laugh too!
