In its first production of the 2006-07 season, Pacific University's Department of Theatre and Dance presents The Greeks: The War, a 2-hour cycle of Greek tragedies by John Barton and Kenneth Cavander.
Dr. Ellen Margolis, Director of Theatre, heads up the production, which features 11 student actors.
"The power of these stories is undeniable, and reading them again last year, I was struck by how current some of the questions remain," said Margolis. "Against a background of valor, loss, and retaliation, passionate men and women argue about pretexts for war and the existence of the gods, arguments that have immediate consequences in the choices each character will make."
The design team scenic and lighting designer Joel Hobson and costume designer Caitlin Quinn drew inspiration from images of modern warfare and displaced peoples.
Hobson notes, "The set evokes devastated urban landscapes, suggesting a connection between ancient stories and the all-too-familiar images of broken cities, fallen skyscrapers, and refugees in search of answers."
Adding to the atmosphere, Professor Tim Stephens of Pacific's Department of Music has written an original score for the show.
