The music in the film also helps define much of the action, with many popular songs from the period well chosen to underscore various themes. The tempo and lyrics of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" in one scene are very appropriate.
The setting of San Francisco, a city famous for its hills, provides a relevant metaphor, with Chris Gardner encountering many highs and lows in his life, but always looking upwards.
And that's something that we all can apply to ourselves.
