The 23-year-old club, which incubated groups such as the Ramones, Television, Blondie and Talking Heads, will close because its landlord, a homeless advocacy group, decided not to renew the club's lease. "CBGB's is a state of mind," Smith said during a set in which she sang a medley of Ramones songs. "It's the cultural rape of New York City that this place is being pushed out," photographer John Nikolai told The New York Times.
The club's full name is CBGB OMFUG, for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers." Gormandizer usually means a ravenous eater of food but in this case it means a voracious eater of music.
