Stocks mixed after Pyongyang nuclear test

NEW YORK, NY, United States (UPI) -- North Korea`s nuclear bomb test over the weekend left U.S. stock indexes mixed and Japan`s yen slightly lower against the dollar.


The Dow Jones industrial average fell 6.09 or 0.05 percent to 11,844.

12 in early afternoon trading. The Nasdaq composite gained 9.88 or 0.

43 percent to 2,309.87, and the Standard Poor`s 500 rose 0.33 or 0.

02 percent to 1,349.91.
The underground explosion by North Korea, which the country said made it a nuclear power, was denounced by many nations as provocative and unnecessary.


The U.S. bond markets were closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day.


The dollar rose to 119.07 yen from 119.01 but the euro was up, too, hitting $1.

2599 from $1.2595.
Tokyo`s Nikkei 225 settled at 16,436.

06 after declining 13.27 or 0.08 percent, and London`s FTSE 100 closed at 6,030.

90 on a gain of 29.70 or 0.49 percent.
