President Richard M. Nixon signed a bill requiring states to lower the maximum speed limit to 55 MPH. The law was meant to conserve gasoline supplies during an embargo imposed by Arab oil-producing countries.

The embargo was lifted on March 13, 1974, but the speed limit lid stayed on until 1987.
