Amazon.com Sales Rank: #61,935 in Music (See ) Would you like to ? This is an extremely high-quality album.
The blending of hip-hop, with reggae, Senegalese music, and even Cuban music (in Esperanza) is masterfully done. While I've seen some reviewers bemoan the "is it reggae or rap?" quality of some international hip-hop artists, I think that Daara J's ability to appropriate these different styles (and discourses they represent) and make them work together seamlessly is brilliant.
You don't have to understand the lyrics to recognize the skillz present, and -- of particular importance in hip-hop -- the production is excellent.
In contrast to a prior review, I would suggest that this is not a dance album. There are certainly a few catchy danceable songs, but on the whole this is probably not going to drive people en masse to the dance floor.
But it certainly will have everyone listening making mental notes to purchase the album ASAP.
