ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Davis Love III and 13-year-old son Dru shot a 13-under 59 on Saturday for a share of the first-round lead with defending champions Bernhard and Stefan Langer in the Del Webb Father/Son Challenge. Love, a 3-handicapper, turned 13 on Saturday.
"Players like Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie have gotten so good and so accomplished at such a young age, it makes it even more and more popular," Davis Love III said. "It's amazing how good the kids are these days." Last year, at age 15, Stefan Langer became the youngest son to win the scramble event at ChampionsGate Golf Club.
Youth was the theme of the day. Davis Love is the youngest father in the field at age 42. Moreover, of the five teams tied for fourth or better, four feature players from the regular PGA Tour - Langer, Love, Vijay Singh and Bob Tway.
Over the tournament's 11-year history, Champions Tour players have won nine times, so even the victorious dads are getting younger. Singh, along with 16-year-old son Qass, shot a 60, and Tway and son Kevin, 18, had a 61. The old guard had its moments, too.
The event's marquee pairing of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus produced more than just good-natured banter between the longtime rivals. The 66-year-old Nicklaus and son Jackie birdied the final eight holes for a 62. Palmer and grandson Sam Saunders finished with a 64.
"The last nine holes, we figured out how to play a little golf," said Nicklaus, who teamed with son Gary to win the 1999 event. "Now, if we could just figure out how to play the front nine." Will Jack Nicklaus make the cut at the British Open?
