Sharp lyrics and clear diction, or raw power? Was Midnight Oil's Red Sails in the Sunset better than Diesel and Dust? Which is the better song, the Bad Seeds' The Mercy Seat (covered by Johnny Cash) or one of their ballads, The Ship Song, Into My Arms or Straight to You?

Which song would You Am I send to the starter's gate? The blistering Berlin Chair or the heartbreaking Heavy Heart? What about the Cruel Sea?

It's a very personal record and it's focused. We had a very definite idea about how we wanted to sound on record, and it get it right.

I think that's what makes it artistically interesting. The eccentricity of it makes it interesting - we were dirty. It was a very tumultuous year for me and I was writing about things going on in my life that were almost immediate.

People said by the woman and being frustrated by that. It kind of suited what I was going through that as well! I was aware that we were starting Years down the track, that's what they were doing, so that was one of the small wins we had.

Eventually I got it together with the band. We used to play at the Lounge every week. I stopped playing it live for about six months as it was getting bashed about and losing its delicacy.

It was all full of little associations and chance meetings. I was also brilliant.
A lot of people heard my stuff for the first time then.
