Birmingham assistant boss Eric Black claims the club are "nowhere near where we want to be" despite leading the Coca-Cola Championship by eight points.
Blues are on course for an immediate return to the Barclays Premiership after overcoming their early season troubles to hit form and seize the initiative in the promotion race.
Steve Bruce's side will also have the opportunity to increase their lead to 11 points when they face Luton at St Andrews on Friday but the club are taking nothing for granted.
Black told the Birmingham Mail: "It's now for us to maintain our position, and that's what we will be trying to do. The players' enthusiasm for the task and their application has been fantastic.
"We just have to ensure that they are told constantly that we are nowhere near where we want to be - that's in the Premiership.
"We're halfway through the season and, yes, we're top of the table and eight points is a nice cushion, but there are still a lot of points to be taken or lost."
Birmingham have won 12 of their last 13 games, the last seven in succession, and their 2-1 Boxing Day success over QPR was the first time in six outings they had not scored at least three times.
"When it stays at 1-1 and then 2-1, it always becomes a bit edgy - but you cannot expect to score four or five goals every time you play," Black admitted.
"I thought it was a positive performance under difficult circumstances."
Luton need points to avoid being pulled into a relegation fight after their inconsistent form continued with a 4-1 defeat at Colchester on Tuesday.
