GREELEY, Colo. A near-perfect first half helped Eastern Washington to an easy 34-0 victory over Northern Colorado in the first-ever Big Sky Conference matchup between the schools Saturday.
It was Eastern's first shutout in 215 games, dating back to a 3-0 win over Stephen F.
Austin in 1987.
"Our team did a great job," said Eagles coach Paul Wulff. "Our coaches did a good job to put our players in a position to make plays, and they did.
We did some really, really good things."
Eastern (2-5, 2-2) scored four touchdowns in the first 19 minutes of the game, with redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Nichols leading touchdown drives of 81, 72, 37 and 14 yards. Eastern led 31-0 at halftime.
Defensively, Eastern held Northern Colorado to 100 yards in the first half and had interceptions by Gregor Smith and David Eneberg.
Brett Bergstrom made a 56-yard field goal before the break that is the second-longest in school history.
Eastern finished the game with a season-high 478 yards of total offense, while holding the Bears (1-6, 0-4) to 169.
Quarterback Noah Shepard accounted for 263 yards of offense, running back Stefan Logan rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns, and South Dakota (6-1, 4-0) scored touchdowns on all three of its first-half possessions in beating Western Washington (2-5, 1-4) in a North Central Conference game.
South Dakota, ranked 14th in Division II, had a 548-276 edge in total offense.
Western quarterback James Monrean, who completed 18 of his first 21 passing attempts, finished the contest 23 of 34 for 209 yards, but the Vikings ran for just 58 yards on 23 carries against a USD defense that has yet to allow more than 85 yards rushing in a game this season.
Western's lone touchdown came late in the third quarter. After a 47-yard kickoff return by Craig Garner, the Vikings moved 43 yards in nine plays, capped by a 1-yard run by Garner. Monrean set up the score with a 14-yard scramble.
Garner had four kickoff returns for 145 yards, and also added five receptions for 47 yards.
Quarterback Mike Reilly completed 22 of 32 passes for a season-high 314 yards and three scores, all to Johnny Spevak, to lead the Wildcats (4-3) over Western Oregon (4-2) in nonconference action.
Reilly aired it out in the opening quarter, throwing for 151 yards in the first 15 minutes.
He connected with Spevak on scoring plays of 56 and 31 yards to give Central Washington a 14-6 lead at the end of the quarter.
Spevak, who entered the game ranked second in the NCC in both receptions and receiving yards, had a game-high nine catches for a career-high 139 yards.
Brett Gordon threw for two touchdowns and Craig Chiado ran for 132 yards and a touchdown, leading Pacific Lutheran (2-4, 2-1 Northwest Conference) past Menlo.
The Oaks (3-3, 1-2) scored the first 10 points of the game, but the Lutes scored back-to-back touchdowns before halftime to take control. Chase Reed scored on a 7-yard touchdown, and then Gordon ran the ball in from 11 yards out for a 14-10 lead.
Playing in front of a homecoming crowd that was the largest in Pine Bowl history, Whitworth crushed Lewis Clark.
The 12th-ranked Pirates improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the NWC in front of 3,650 spectators.
Quarterback Joel Clark completed 11 of 15 passes for 186 yards with three touchdowns, and also ran 20 yards for a TD on his only carry. He also broke the school record for career touchdown passes of 57.
A.J. Brown completed 11 of 30 passes for 115 yards for Lewis Clark (0-5, 0-2), but threw five interceptions.
