A student of chayanat at Bulbul Academy, Aliya s first playback song was in the film Sootarang in 1962 which won her the President s award at the young age of 12. Then followed Kagojer Nouka, Gunai Bibi and Soye Nadia Jage Pani.
Aliya was trained in classical music by Phool Mohammed and Srimati Girija Devi Padmasree, padmabhushan (Benaras Gharana). She trained in Praacheen Bangla Gaan (200 years old Bengali songs) with Sri Chandi Das Mal in Kolkata. Aliya has been performing in North America, Europe and Canada since 1992.
She has also been involved in Bangladeshi theatre. Aliya is the first Bangladeshi singer to sing in the Lincoln Centre on Broadway, New York.
