A pensioner was killed and another seriously injured after two devastating house fires in Liverpool. In the days before Christmas, a 65-year-old woman died after a blaze broke out in her Anfield home, while another 70-year-old woman was last night in a critical condition in hospital after a fire in Woolton. The Anfield fire broke out on Friday night at a bungalow in Vanbrugh Crescent where the woman lived alone.
Firefighters discovered that the blaze had burnt itself out shortly before they arrived.
They helped remove the woman's body and stayed from 8.55pm until 11pm.
It is thought the fire started on or near the sofa in the living room of the property, but investigations are still being carried out by Mersey-side Fire and Rescue Service.
It is not believed that there were any suspicious circumstances.
Shortly after 3am on Saturday morning, a 70-year-old woman was rescued from her two-storey house on Speke Road in Woolton.
Firefighters battled through flames to drag her from the first floor bedroom, the seat of the fire.
The woman suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to Whiston Hospital where last night her condition was said to be critical but stable.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said the circumstances of the fire, which was contained to the bedroom, were not suspicious but the cause of the fire is not yet known.
Another pensioner suffered smoke inhalation after his TV set went up in flames.
The 70-year-old man escaped from his home on Imrie Street, Walton, at 10.15pm on Christmas Eve but declined to be taken to hospital.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service is urging all homeowners to ensure they have a fire alarm fitted and make sure it is working to help avoid further tragedy over the festive period and beyond.
It is thought it started on or near sofa.
