This year, we both have a list of shows that we can't get out of our heads. The concert calendar was loaded right up until last week (Damien Rice and Deftones, anyone?), and at a lot of the gigs, we were as giddy as the teenage girls at this year's Fall Out Boy or Rascal Flatts stops -- definitely not our own favorites.
1. Bruce Springsteen (Xcel Energy Center, June 11). It was a diverse repertoire of folk music with a too-large band, but it was so exhilarating to see rock's unrivaled live master have so much fun -- something I hadn't witnessed since first seeing him in a club in 1975.
2. Barbra Streisand (Xcel, Oct. 24).
Who ever thought she'd sing in the Twin Cities? Babs put so much humanity and personality into her performance, I was nearly verklempt. 3.
Vince Gill (O'Shaughnessy Auditorium, Oct. 27). For more than three hours, he charmed with his multifaceted talent and personality and terrific band.
Great entertainment (he's funny enough to do standup) and great musicality. 4. Gnarls Barkley (First Avenue, Aug.
2). As infectious onstage as they are inventive in the studio. 5.
Tony Bennett (Mystic Lake Casino, Aug. 14). The ageless 80-year-old crooner sold smiles and songs with an in-the-moment, eager-to-please blend of class and charisma.
6. Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint (O'Shaughnessy, June 28). The seemingly disparate pairing of two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers made for an inspired and inspiring evening of cross-generational music.
7. We Fest (Detroit Lakes, Aug. 3-5).
The partying was unbeatable but it was the music, especially a no-frills Keith Urban and knockout newcomer Trent Tomlinson, that made this an unforgettable event. 8. Bob Dylan (Mayo Field, Rochester, Sept.
7). He had his first No. 1 album in 30 years, a full moon, sharp-looking outfits and he sounded in playoff form.
9. Lucinda Williams (O'Shaughnessy, March 4). With just her voice, acoustic guitar and Doug Pettibone's guitars, the brilliance of her wise, world-weary songs scorched anew.
10. (tie) Crosby, Stills, Nash Young (Xcel, July 15) and Bob Seger (Xcel, Nov. 28).
I had low expectations for these classic rockers, but Neil Young made CSNY fresh and thrilling, and, after 10 years off, Seger proved that he's still the same -- the quintessential Midwest rocker. 1. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (First Ave, April 16).
By the time they got to "Phenomena" a few songs in, the case was closed: Karen O is the greatest modern rock star. 2. John Prine (Orpheum, May 19).
Always a lovable goof, the 59-year-old picker got serious and sang his heart out in poetic new material ("Clay Pigeons") and old epics ("Sam Stone"). 3. Common (First Ave, Feb.
23). Chicago's No. 2 rapper was passionate with the "Be" songs and playful with the oldies, and he had an uncommonly great band.
4. TV on the Radio (First Ave, Oct. 8).
Punk rock has never sounded more soulful or elegant. 5. Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth (Minnesota State Fair, Aug.
24). The freak show took over the grandstand. 6.
Gnarls Barkley (First Ave, Aug. 2). The tennis costumes were cute and Cee-lo was a hoot, but nothing could overshadow the madcap music.
7. Tool (Orpheum, May 12). Less eye candy than at their Target Center show in September, but way more powerful.
8. The Plastic Constellations, Tapes 'n Tapes (First Ave, July 22). This year's breakout local bands played like they had sold out Wembley Stadium instead.
9. Wilco (Duluth Entertainment Convention Center, July 2). Jeff Tweedy was limping, but the band played in full stride, and everyone got a kick out of the "superior" location.
10. Summit Big Brew (Harriet Island, Sept. 23).
It wasn't Soul Asylum's best gig of '06, nor was it even the brewery's finest moment (incredibly, the beer supply ran short). But what a blast.
