AN INSPIRATIONAL music teacher has won a top national award.
Janet Macleod, from Sawston Village College, has been named Music Teacher of the Year by radio station Classic FM.
School principal June Cannie said the accolade was well deserved.
She said: "We are all delighted Janet's outstanding teaching has been recognised by this prestigious award.
"Year on year, she continues to inspire our pupils, not only through her teaching and her robust good humour, but also through the excellent relationships she establishes with them in the classroom and beyond into the many extra-curricular opportunities she creates."
The Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year award, now in its seventh year, celebrates the inspirational work of teachers who keep alive the tradition of music-making in our schools.
Janet, 52, from Cambridge, has been a music teacher for 30 years. Early on in her career she worked at Sawston Village College for five years, before returning as head of department, a position she has held for the last 11 years.
Janet won the prize because she received the most votes on the Classic FM website.
Her award was announced at a glittering award ceremony in London.
Janet won music equipment for her school and a laptop computer.
"I'm very lucky because I had 30 years of pupils to vote for me!
Since I've won, I've had emails from literally all over the world from past pupils - from Africa, Singapore, Poland. People are saying such lovely things to me that are normally only said when someone is dead!"
"Music matters so much to me, as is being able to help youngsters discover it for themselves.
"It is also great seeing them go on to great things, to become professional players, teachers, and composers.
