The reason so many women suddenly joined the ranks can be summed up quite simple; the feminist movement of the 70s gave women an empowerment that they had never before. Women suddenly realized that they had a voice and that they were going to be reckoned with. Although many never cited feminist as their cause, in fact some denied it, they all proved by their example.
Secondly, the Punk movement of the mid-late 70s opened more opportunities for women. Down through history, women have found their release through song.
