West Palm Beach, FL (AHN)- Nicknamed the "Queen Mother of Tennis," Hazel Virginia Hotchkiss changed women's tennis by introducing volley and net play. Born December 20, 1886, in Haldsburg, CA, she began entering tennis tournaments in 1909, winning every event she entered, and continuing to win every competition for the next two years.
In 1919, Hotchkiss won the national women's championship for the fourth time.
She played tennis for sixty years and won forty-four national tennis titles. In 1973, Queen Elizabeth II named Wightman an honorary Commander of the British Empire. She was inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame 1986.
Hazel Virginia Hotchkiss died December 5, 1974 in Newton, MA.
