Abuja - Nigerian police on Sunday paraded four suspected killers of a would-be candidate for the governorship in the troubled south western state of Ekiti.
Ayo Daramola, the foremost challenger to the then governor Ayo Fayose in forthcoming elections, was killed by robbers in his country home in August.
Ekiti was on Thursday put under a state of emergency amid a political crisis that has led to the impeachment of Fayose.
Presenting the suspects to journalists, police chief Sunday Ehindero said that the four - Olanipekun Taiwo, Segun Balogun, Emeka Andrew and Busuyi Aladesanmi - had confessed to committing the crime along with two others.
The other suspects were identified as Olumide Ojo, who has since died, and a suspect named as Daniel, who is still at large.
Ehindero said the motives behind the attack had not been fully established, however.
He said the question of a possible political motive for the killing "needs further clarification".
"The motives behind the attack had not been fully established as some of the gang members claimed that they went there to rob, while Olanipekun Taiwo claimed that he and Olumide Ojo were commissioned" to carry out the killing, Ehindero said.
The police also paraded a person who they said was suspected of selling the arms and ammunition used in the crime.
