Colin Sherry said the home, built in 1889, has been in his family for four generations. He said it will be inspected for structural damage today to determine the feasibility of repairing it. Meanwhile, Sherry and his family will stay in a hotel.
The gas pipe was severed past the cutoff point, leaving firefighters unable to stop the flow and forcing them to evacuate neighboring houses. Sherry said the sound of the crash woke him up at about 12:15 a.m.
He rushed downstairs to find the Scion poking into his kitchen. "I hit the bottom the stairs. I heard the gas coming out of the pipe," Sherry said.
"And I just yelled for everybody to get out." Sherry's wife, daughter and a friend evacuated the home. In the front yard, Sherry found Charles Chum, 19, of 101 Amherst St.
, Lawrence, still with his Scion. Chum was taken to Lawrence General Hospital where he was treated and released. He told police he was heading north on Andover Street when he swerved to avoid an animal in the road, police Lt.
Phillip Froburg said.
