Colin Sherry said the home, built in 1889, has been in his family for four generations. He said it will be inspected for structural damage today to determine the feasibility of repairing it. Meanwhile, Sherry and his family will stay in a hotel.

The gas pipe was severed past the cutoff point, leaving firefighters unable to stop the flow and forcing them to evacuate neighboring houses. Sherry said the sound of the crash woke him up at about 12:15 a.m.

He rushed downstairs to find the Scion poking into his kitchen. "I hit the bottom the stairs. I heard the gas coming out of the pipe," Sherry said.

"And I just yelled for everybody to get out." Sherry's wife, daughter and a friend evacuated the home. In the front yard, Sherry found Charles Chum, 19, of 101 Amherst St.

, Lawrence, still with his Scion. Chum was taken to Lawrence General Hospital where he was treated and released. He told police he was heading north on Andover Street when he swerved to avoid an animal in the road, police Lt.

Phillip Froburg said.

The car left the shoulder of the road, pointing down an embankment to the house. Bay State Gas workers dug near the street, looking for a spot to shut off the gas.

Once they did, firefighters opened windows to allow the fumes to escape. Even with utilities and power shut off, Deputy Fire Chief James Dolan was worried about an ignition spark. "There were some tense moments," Dolan said.

"It would at least blow the windows out and the doors." "I hate to think what would have happened," he said. "That's why we had the area cordoned off and people out of the way.

" "Why it didn't blow when he hit it, I don't know," Sherry said. "We were truly fortunate that way." The Sherrys do not know when they may be able to live in their home again.

They plan to stay at a hotel in Andover. Officer Daniel Leonard is investigating the accident. No charges have been filed.

Froburg said Chum was likely on his way home from work. He was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Froburg said.
