From cartoon superheroes to environmental campaigners, cinemas saw it all in 2006. Film review Cameron McMillan checks out the best and worst films of 2006.
It was all about the comeback in 2006.

Superman, James Bond, Jack Sparrow and Ethan Hunt all made returns while Al Gore showed his face for the first time since losing a presidential election to George W Bush. But, while some comebacks were successful, others were not. Superman may be able to fly and Tom Cruise might be on top of the world right now but both Superman Returns and Mission Impossible III fell flat.

You can't go wrong with great jokes and classy live music. They've never really worked well on the big screen but Dave Chappelle pulls it off brilliantly in Block Party. Music and stand-up comedy is intertwined perfectly as Chappelle throws a free party in his old neighbourhood in New York.

He packs out his old street with the likes of Kanye West, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Jill Scott and a reunited Fugees who don't disappoint. Seeing this on a big screen at the Civic in Auckland in front of a packed house enhanced the movie even more. For once it's a Kiwi comedy.

After the huge success of The World's Fastest Indian last year it was good to see a number of New Zealand films this year including Out of the Blue and No.2. But the pick of the bunch had to be Sione's Wedding, a much derseved chance on the big screen for the men from the Naked Samoans.

It was a simple script, where four Samoan guys are banned from their best friend's wedding, but the cast pull it off, providing New Zealanders with a much-needed opportunity to laugh at ourselves. It was hit and miss with critics for some reason - maybe they couldn't stand a bald Natalie Portman - but V For Vendetta was brilliantly adapted from comic book to film. Based on a freedom fighter who used terrorist tactics to fight against a totalitarian society, both Portman and Hugo Weaving were outstanding as the Wachowski made up for their forgettable finale to the Matrix trilogy.

The Da Vinci Code: Over-long and pedantic, the film version of one of the world's most exciting books managed to commit the ultimate film sin: It was boring. Basic Instinct 2: What was Sharon Stone thinking? Her career was on the up with a brilliant guest spot on The Practice, but there's no coming back from this plotless, pointless sequel.

And the less said about Shazz'a surgically-enhanced body the better. Lady in the Water: M. Night Shyamalan produced his fourth flop since his 1999 breakthrough The Sixth Sense.

Maybe it's time to give up. Click: Another Adam Sandler borefest that failed to impress. Lost points for trying to work off the sudden return to fame of David Hasselhoff.

Snakes on a Plane: Don't believe the hype. The internet hype that is. Everyone knew they were wasting their money by going to it and we all went anyway.

According to eight movies from 2006 jumped into their acclaimed bottom 100 movies of all time list.
