EDMONTON -- When a team scores a goal in hockey, the puck isn't dropped at centre ice until the goal is lit up on the scoreboard, right?
In football, we don't see a kick-off following a touchdown until the major score is posted.
In baseball, a batter isn't sent to the plate until .
.. well, you get my drift.
For a rookie curling reporter covering my first event -- and needing all the help possible -- this quickly began to be my new pet peeve.
It happened a few times this weekend at the Canada Cup Qualifier.
I found out that I'm not alone in my query.
"A team should be penalized if they don't put up the score," muttered a fan in the back row.
This isn't an issue for ardent curling fans.
They have great eyes and can tell you if it's one, two, or three, even if it was within inches.
But for the casual curling fan, seeing the score as soon as possible might help increase their knowledge of the game.
I appreciate players have other things on their minds than hanging numbers on the scoreboards -- and it is the players who man the scoreboard.
Perhaps there's an opportunity for loyal curling fans to be updated with scores as quickly as possible.
It was from Augusta National Golf Club to the Saville Sports Centre in under 40 hours for Bruce Saville last week.
Saville purchased the treasured round at the home of The Masters at a recent charity auction.
"I wanted to break 100," says Saville.
"I was really happy. I shot 94.
"
So, how was Amen Corner?
"Good," says Saville, who was honorary chair of the Canada Cup Qualifier. "I parred No.
11, but then I ended up in Rae's Creek."
Saige Pacholok is plugging away at her hockey-playing prowess.
The west-end forward has made the U-18 Team Alberta squad, which will be playing in the Canada Winter Games next March -- and she's the only 15-year-old on the team.
The provincial reps are playing in the University of Alberta Pandas' tournament which starts Thursday.
Pacholok is also in her rookie season of the Edmonton Chimos of the Western Women's Hockey League.
Matt Esposito was baptized by fire -- and ice -- a week ago tonight in Red Deer.
Esposito was called up by the Chiliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League. He didn't start against the Rebels, but got the tap on the shoulder midway through the second period.
Esposito then stopped 19 of 22 shots in a 6-5 overtime win over the Rebels.
The next night, he made 35 saves to lead the Bruins to a 3-2 win against Calgary.
His first Bruins loss was a 2-1 OT setback in Lethbridge over the Hurricanes.
Esposito, 18, started the season with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
He played several games last season for the Everett Silvertips before being traded to the Bruins just over a week ago.
St. Albert's Jase Weslowsky is having a great run for the St.
Cloud University in Minnesota Huskies.
The former Crusader and New York Islander draft pick has a 3-0 record and a .963 goals-against-average.
The Huskies are also on an 11-game unbeaten run.
