SLIS alumna Kate (Borchers) Hastings (MLS 98) has accepted a new position as the youth services manager at the Upper Arlington Public Library in Columbus, Ohio. Previously she worked at Worthington Libraries for six years. She recently responded to the following email interview request.
Tell us about the new position at Upper Arlington Public Library. What do you like about it? What do you find most challenging?
I have loved being a children s librarian since 1998, developing my skills and watching children and their parents enjoy the experience they have at their public library. Now as a manager I get to enjoy growing professionals like myself - giving them the tools they need to become happy, effective youth librarians. It is rewarding to have a more direct impact on the services we offer and see the positive outcome of some of the changes we ve been able to implement.
What is the most challenging? Coming into a new organization in a managerial position has definitely been challenging - learning a new culture and also developing a new set of skills. I knew I would be trading in programming for administrative duties.
Letting go of fun tasks has certainly been an adjustment. But the biggest challenge is trying to implement real change and to have vision when the day-to-day tasks stack up. It s hard to think about how we are going to stay relevant and what services we should add (and take away) when there is a line of children at your desk and crayons to pick up off the floor.
What SLIS course(s) have been most valuable to you? Certainly my youth services courses and how they taught me to evaluate materials. They also gave me the confidence to dive right into the profession, where most of my learning has occurred.
The time I spent as the co-manager of the Family Housing Library was the best experience of all - I was able to order materials, schedule and evaluate staff, and direct some of our facilities issues (like the overflowing toilet!). My folklore class encouraged me to develop storytelling skills, an art I thoroughly enjoy.
Was there someone who acted as your mentor while you were at SLIS? Tell us a little about this relationship and why it was valuable. Elinor Okada was the Halls of Residence Library Manager and she taught me how to effectively order materials (don t wait until the end to spend your budget!
), she encouraged displays and helped me to field problems from unattended children and challenging employees. Most of all, she helped me realize that fun and work should be the same thing. What advice would you give to current SLIS students?
Don t be afraid to tell people what you want out of your career. Be passionate!!
The library profession has been very nurturing - at least in Children s Services. There is a lot of sharing and little competition. We want to see each other succeed.
Get involved in your state library associations. Network. Talk to alumni and other professionals about your dream job and we will help you get there.
