PORT NECHES - Rowena Dupuis, 52, and her daughter, Karmen Dupuis, 17, went everywhere together. They delivered homemade sausage balls to the Port Neches High School football players the night before the game against Nederland and chaperoned middle school dances at St. Elizabeth Church.

It s almost a gift they left together, said Rev. Bennie Patillo

The third installment in my ever growing series of AWOLC Tops of 2006 is from Spicy Nuts.

When not playing a wide array of sports or knitting quilts, you can find Mr. Nuts at the top of the list of movers and shakers in all of NYC. If there is an event to be had, or an adventure to be proposed, Spicy will be there, often with actual bells on.

I present to you the Tops of 2006 for Spicy Nuts. Enjoi!Spicy Nuts prepares for his intiation into Team Zissou.

The problem with year end Best Of lists is that I don t conduct my intellectual or culture oriented pursuits according to the calendar. My general M.O.

when looking for things to listen to, watch, read, eat, wear, etc. is to rely on happenstance and serendipity ndash; therefore, I don t usually pay attention to the copyright dates of most things. So with that in mind my list is going to contain items that either were released in 2006 or that I discovered in 2006, because really, it s all about what made me happy or blew my mind this year, not when it was created.

So here we go: 1. The Sartorialist ndash; Unfortunately I am cursed with caring way too much about the shirts on my back. For those likewise obsessed with killer threads, this guerilla-style street photography photo-blog (focused mainly on men) will definitely help waste an extra half hour at work everyday.

Shots of people who the blogger finds on the streets of NY and other cities whose style he admires. He is NOT a fashionista, so don t expect a focus on fly by night trends or avante-garde unwearable pieces. Style, not fashion is the focus.

2. The Ballad of the Whiskey Robber (Amazon) ndash; What happens when you escape from Romania in the early 90s only to end up in Budapest with no money and no skills other than a reputation as a third string bruiser from a perpetually winless Romanian hockey club? You go to work robbing banks after practice every day.

This 100% true story of Hungary s most notorious bank robber should be a blockbuster film by now, but like they say, the book is ALWAYS better. 3. The Last Playboy: The High Life of Porfirio Rubirosa (Amazon) ndash; This guy did nothing but play polo, drive fast cars, and seduce women from Zsa Zsa Gabor to every blue blooded American socialite of the 40s, 50s and 60s to Europe s crazy aristocracy.

Go to a restaurant in Europe and ask for a Rubirosa they ll bring you a pepper grinder the size of your forearm a reference to this guy s legendary trouser snake. This book is fantastic because it is not a gossip focused rag but rather an in depth study of the history of the time and the circumstances that made a character such as Porfirio possible. 4.

The Science of Sleep ndash; Charlotte Gainsbourg (yes, daughter of that Gainsbourg) could sit on a park bench reading aloud from the Wiley Employee Handbook wearing a potato sack and I d watch. Fortunately in this movie we get a scipt and direction from Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) for her to work with. This movie is not going to shake up the universe but it will make you fall in love for 90 minutes, which is mostly what I want from a movie.

5. Jose Reyes/David Wright/Carlos Beltran ndash; The 2006 Mets were the most exciting team in baseball last year, period. 6.

Berkshire Pork Steamed Buns at Momofuku Noodle Bar ndash; This place is over-priced, over-crowded and over-hyped, but if you can eat just one of these steamed buns and not think you ve died and gone to heaven, you are probably some kind of dirty vegetarian hipster douche (not that there s anything wrong with that). 7. Croatia ndash; Obviously not new to 2006, but 2006 might be the year this country finally explodes onto the radar for American travelers (which is probably unfortunate).

I spent two weeks there in May and I was blown away. The cities are amazing, the coastline is spectacular, the people are assholes (but beautiful) and there is more to explore there than 2 weeks could possibly allow. Just look at the freakin image results in the link.

8. The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis (Amazon) the author of Moneyball focuses his considerable talents on football this time out, explaining why the Left Tackle is now the second highest paid position in the NFL behind Quarterback. Starting with a second by second break-down of THE Break-Down (Taylor destroying Theismann s leg), Lewis delves into two related stories the evolution of the Left Tackle position and the adoption by a rich white southern family of the next great football prodigy a poor, black almost-high school dropout with no family who attracts every college and NFL scout in the country.

A great read. 9. The iTunes Music Store ndash; Yeah, I know, I just lost any and all credibility, but fuck it the ability to browse endless iMixes from any album has led me to some great bands this year that I otherwise never would have found.

It also let s me buy only the songs from those bands that I like, which saves me countless dollars. Cuz let s face it, very few bands nowadays can actually put together a full album worth buying (I m looking at you Bright Eyes, and you Pete Doherty). Fantastic stuff I ve found in 2006: Of Montreal Tokyo Police Club The 1900 s The Spinto Band Say Hi To Your Mom The Sally Fields Okay American Analog Set And tons of others I can t remember 10.

ndash; A monthly web magazine featuring the works amateur and professional photographers from around the world. No ads, no text, no fluff, just interesting and different work from out there. 11.

McNally Robinson Bookstore at 50 Prince Street the best bookstore on Earth (since Border s in Ann Arbor became the giant international WalMart suckage that it is now) the magazine section is spectacular, the tables in the front of New Fiction and New Non-Fiction are a treasure trove selected by people that clearly don t suck, the coffee is infinitely better than Starsucks and the ladies that work there are a book nerd s wet dream. Ok, that s my list for 06 of stuff that I discovered. Now here s a list of movies that I SHOULD have seen (and you should see too) but due to the unfortunate fact of being a grown-up and all the annoying grown up things I have to do (like work, exercise, talk to people, get drunk, go to fucking weddings, play softball, go shopping, yada yada) I never got around to it: 1.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston documentary about this highly disturbed but very gifted musician. I ve been told it s right up there with Crumb as top 5 docu s of all time 2. Little Miss Sunshine need I say anything?

3. The Departed Scorcese, DeNiro, the mob it s really a no brainer 4. Flannel Pajamas I dunno, the trailer was fucking amazing 5.

Mutual Appreciation I dunno, the NYTimes review was fucking amazing 6. Casino Royale Bond finally gets his balls back Here s to 2007.

DAILY WORLD / KATHY QUIGG Hoquiam High School junior Jade Beard gives Matt Anglesey his dinner order at the HHS Food Ball takeover at the Grizzly Den Tuesday night.
