New York, NY (AHN)-Legendary "American Bandstand" host Dick Clark held a two-day auction at Guernsey's auction house in Manhattan, selling personal music memorabilia ranging from his first microphone to Bob Dylan's harmonica.
Fifty years after his first appearance on the celebrated TV show "American Bandstand," the 76-year-old famed TV host sold his personal collection to help raise money for research on cancer and AIDS. In fact, the Dick Clark Auction has been called the largest in rock 'n' roll history.
Although, music lovers were able to bid on such collectibles as Madonna's bustier worn during the video for "Open Your Heart" for $11,400, a cape belonging to Elvis Presley for $24,000, and a pair of red and yellow boots worn by Elton John for $9,600, one of the auctions' featured items turned out to be a fake.
According to reports, Paul McCartney's autographed Beatles' era, left-handed Hofner bass guitar, which was estimated to sell for $25,000 to $100,000, was not an authentic original.
After the makers of the Hofner model told "Good Morning America" that the model wasn't made until 1978, years after the Beatles disbanded, Guernsey's Auction House agreed to remove the prized collectible.
