Ruben Barrales's appointment was affirmed by the chamber's Board of Directors. He is to begin work Jan. 8.

The post was vacated when Jessie J. Knight Jr. resigned in August.

Richard Vortmann, a chamber board member, has served as interim chief during the selection process. Barrales, 44, has experience in government and in the private sector. He has spent the last five years serving as deputy assistant to the president, acting as a liaison to state and local elected officials.

Before working on the White House staff, Barrales was president and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, a civic organization focused on public policies favoring technology business. He has also served on various boards, including the California Speaker's Commission on State and Local Government Finance, the California Commission of Local Governance for the 21st Century and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
