The title track of the EP, "Gloria," may surprise people who have preconceived notions of what kinds of songs CCM artists produce. "Gloria" makes no mention of religion whatsoever, despite its misleading title and the classic "In Excelsis Deo" tune that creeps into the final refrain. The song bemoans the fact that Santa Claus hasn't been fulfilling the singer's Christmas wish for the girl of his dreams.
The girl's name? Gloria, of course! This up-tempo number has a Blink 182 / garage band sound to the mix, heavy on the drums and heavier on the fun.
Putting the bow on this set is Hawk Nelson's take on the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day." This one brings the mood down a bit, as was the somber intention of the poet whose work has been converted a number of times into Christmas carols. Here, the band adds in their own refrain: "I can hear Your Voice like the bells on Christmas Day.
"
If you can't find "Gloria" at your music store of choice, at least be sure to visit the band's website and give each tune a listen. Or download them out of iTunes and put a little bounce in your step as you iPod your way through the shopping malls this season.
