Northpinellas: Poster art for next Jazz Holiday sought

Organizers of the Clearwater Jazz Holiday, held annually at Coachman Park on the third weekend of October, are seeking art for next year s poster.
The poster design must include blank space that does not interfere with the design for sponsor logos or the weekend s lineup. Submissions should be printed in color, at least 11 by 17 inches.

The deadline is Jan. 8.

Adopt a military family this holiday
The 4-H Operation Military Kids project will join forces with individuals, military members, veterans and community organizations to launch a support program for military families this holiday season.

The Tarpon Springs Police Department s annual Cops/Kids Christmas program provides gifts to local children whose families are in difficult times.
The Police Department will accept new, unwrapped gifts for children of all ages, from infants through teenagers, until Dec. 20.

Officials also are accepting cash donations to provide special Wish List items. Make checks payable to the Tarpon Springs Police Department Cops/Kids Program. Donations can be dropped off at the Police Department, 444 S Huey Ave.

The Civil Air Patrol Palm Harbor Cadet Squadron is looking for new members 12 to 21 and for adults older than 21 to be senior members or supervisors. The Palm Harbor chapter, which also covers Tarpon Springs, especially welcomes middle school students.
Young people in the program attend military camps, practice search and rescue techniques in the forest, can earn scholarships to become pilots and perform community service.


Adults interested in joining as senior members must go through extensive background checks. The cadets meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Pinellas Clerk of Circuit Court Ken Burke will perform a group wedding ceremony in the main courthouse courtyard at 2 p.m. on Feb.

The group ceremony will be a first, and the usual $30 fee to perform the marriage is waived for couples choosing to wed in the special ceremony. (Standard marriage license fees will still apply.

The Pinellas County Property Appraiser will accept applications for an additional property tax exemption for qualified older homeowners from Jan. 1 through March 1.


This year, 17 municipalities plus unincorporated Pinellas offer the additional exemption. To qualify, homeowners must meet all of these requirements:
- At least one property owner is 65 or older as of Jan. 1, 2007.


- The applicant qualifies for or already receives a homestead exemption.
- The total household income is $23,463 or less, plus a cost-of-living adjustment to be determined by the state Department of Revenue in mid January. (Non-taxable Social Security income is not included in that total.

- The homeowner lives in an area offering the exemption.
First-time applicants should bring proof of their age plus documents that show their total income, such as federal income tax Form 1040 or 1040A for 2006, an SSA 1099 or any 1099 or bank statements.
The senior exemption does not automatically renew like the homestead exemption does, but homeowners who received the senior exemption last year can renew by mail this year.

A renewal form will be mailed by the end of January.

through 5 p.m. weekdays.

The nonprofit Deaf and Hearing Connection for Tampa Bay offers specialized telephones and ring-signaling devices at no cost to residents who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf and blind, or speech-impaired.
Residents can receive the equipment as long as they continue to live in the state for at least six months per year. Telecommunications access for the hearing- and speech-impaired is paid for by a surcharge on every telephone consumer s bill.
