The 68-member marching band competed against eight bands of similar size from Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and North Carolina, said Band Director Tim Fioravanti. It was a chance for bands around the country to see how they stacked up against the heavy-hitters, like Waterford, who regularly compete in the circuit, Fioravanti said. Fioravanti said the honor means more recognition, and the kids were beside themselves.
My whole philosophy is you do as well as you can, and reach your potential, he said. If judges happen to put you in first, good for you, if you come in 10th, so be it. The bands are judged on visual performance, music performance, music effect and visual effect.
Just a week earlier, the Waterford band placed second at the all-state competition. ![]()
