1. Burges won its 10th District 1-4A team tennis title in 11 years after outlasting El Paso 10-8. The Mustangs won despite the absence of its top girls player, Casey Acosta, who had a back injury.
2. El Paso captured its fifth District 1-4A volleyball championship in seven years after easing past Jefferson 3-0 on Friday. In 2-4A, Riverside swept District 2-4A rival Del Valle that same day to clinch its fourth district title in six years.
3. Montwood's volleyball team, ranked sixth in El Paso, put the District 1-5A playoff race into a flux by knocking off No. 1 Franklin 3-2 then No. 3 Americas 3-1. The Rams now are tied for fourth with Eastwood at 8-4, and have split matches with Franklin, Americas and the Troopers. Up next is El Dorado, Coronado, No.
4 Hanks and Socorro.
4. Eastwood scored 61 points to win the girls race at the Burges Invitational cross country meet, which included every team in El Paso. Jessica Payne and Maegen Stires finished sixth and 10th for the Troopers, who broke Del Valle's
three-year local win streak. Meanwhile, Chapin's boys gave state-ranked Socorro its first local loss since 2004. The Huskies scored 74 points, with Victor Sanchez and Sam Velasco finishing second and fifth, respectively.
5. Franklin junior Megan Hetzel won the girls division of the Burges Invitational cross country meet. Hetzel finished in 12: 45.19 and gave Del Valle senior Brissia Montalvo her first local defeat this season. In the boys division, Mountain View junior Raudel Miranda took first with a time of 16:17.59.
6. Fielding its first senior class, El Dorado notched its first District 1-5A victory after out-hustling Bel Air 35-29 at the Highlanders' Homecoming. Aztec tailback Kalil Field-Mackall rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries.
7. Quarterback Mike Foran continued his spectacular season by scoring three rushing touchdowns and two more through the air in Chapin's 49-7 rout of Austin. He rushed for 71 yards on only nine carries and was 8-of-13 passing for 139 yards.
8. Toris Knight rushed for 336 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries as the Eagles flew past Jefferson 49-13. Knight now has 869 yards and nine touchdowns rushing over the past four games.
9. Joe Cole rushed for 171 yards and had a touchdown reception to help Parkland hold off Del Valle 18-15 in a battle of District 2-4A unbeatens. The Matadors improved to 3-0 in district and are off to their first 6-0 start.
10. Bowie stunned Burges 10-3 to knock the Mustangs from the undefeated ranks in District 1-4A. It was only Bowie's second win in six games this season, while Burges fell to 2-1 (2-4 overall) in district.
