Odds long on scooping Euro Millions jackpot

Wednesday, 25th October 2006, 15:52

With punters flocking to buy tickets for Friday's Euro Million draw, bookies have warned you have a greater chance of seeing Peter Doherty become Archbishop of Canterbury than scooping the ?75 million jackpot.

William Hill has been flooded with requests from punters wanting them to offer odds of 76 million to one on winning the jackpot, but has delined to offer such long odds.

The longest odds ever offered by the bookies have been 20 million to one, to a postman from Glasgow. He bet that Elvis would crash land a UFO on top of the Loch Ness monster - an event apparently three times more likely than you scooping the Euro Million jackpot.

Odds of 15 million to one were once offered to the late Screaming Lord Sutch, leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party, on his chances of becoming Prime Minister.

Other million to one shots, which on paper, at least, are 76 times more likely to happen than winning the Euro Millions, include John Prescott to win the 100 metres at the 2012 Olympic games, the Queen to abdicate and David Beckham to be crowned King of England and President Bush to be called up for the Ashes.

You can get the same odds on Tony Blair and David Cameron contesting a Wimbledon Final, Pete Doherty to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury, and the temperatur in Britain to hit 100 degrees farenheit - on Christmas Day.

Rupert Adams, a spokesman for William Hill, said that they would not be accepting bets on lottery wins.

He said: "We wouldn't offer odds like that on the lottery, even though they reflect the chances of you winning - because there's an outside chance it might happen.

"If you've just won ?75 million, why would you want another ?

76 million off us?

"The only thing we might offer odds of 76 million to one about are the world ending on a specific date. In theory it would be all but impossible to collect the winnings for the end of the world.

Heaven would be hell for bookies as no-one would ever lose.

"We've only offered odds of more than a million to one twice, to Screaming Lord Sutch and the postman from Glasgow, because we were fairly confident we wouldn't have to pay up."
