GP2 front-runner Timo Glock and former Red Bull driver Christian Klien are two of the leading contenders to land a Honda Racing test driver role next season, autosport.com has learned.
With current test driver Anthony Davidson almost certain to be joining Super Aguri next season alongside Takuma Sato, Honda are on the look-out for a suitably experienced replacement.
Klien is an obvious candidate, as he is desperate to find employment in Formula One after turning down the chance to race in Champ Car next season. The Austrian is unlikely to get a race drive at Spyker-MF1, with Tiago Monteiro believed to be on the verge of agreeing a deal after raising the necessary sponsorship backing.
Should Monteiro's deal be confirmed then Klien's best chance of employment is as a test/reserve driver with a manufacturer team.
His father Johannes Klien was seen in talks at both BMW-Sauber and Honda-Racing last weekend.
Glock too is pushing hard to find a way back into F1. The sometime Jordan driver is set to test for BMW-Sauber in December, as the German manufacturer evaluate their 2007 options, but Honda Racing are also very interested.
Honda Racing boss Nick Fry told autosport.com that both Glock and Klien were on their shortlist of candidates for test driver roles next season, but made it clear no decision was made yet.
"All I can say is that we are looking for someone with a lot of experience," he said.
"There are quite a few drivers who fulfil that criteria.
