ITVS Community Cinema and KQED Community Outreach Seeks Short Video Submissions to Screen at Monthly Community Engagement Screenings


If you have completed a short film related to one of the topics of the ITVS Community Cinema series please send us your submission.

We are now accepting submissions for the October screenings of Democracy on Deadline by Sept. 29th, 2006

We are also accepting submissions for the entire film series on a rolling deadline, if you have a short film related to any of the ITVS Community Cinema films send it now as we would like schedule as many films in advance as possible.



ITVS COMMUNITY CINEMA is the monthly screening series featuring upcoming selections from the Independent Lens season. Presented in partnership with local public television stations and leading community organizations, ITVS Community Cinema holds preview screenings in select markets across the country making a real contribution on a range of current social issues by connecting communities with organizations, information, and the opportunity to get involved.


Guidelines

LENGTH: make sure the piece is between 3-5minutes long

TAPE: give us 30 seconds of black at the head of the tape and 30 seconds of black after your piece is done

The piece must be completely edited and finished.

DEMOCRACY ON DEADLINE by Calvin Skaggs
Screening October 18, 2006

DEMOCRACY ON DEADLINE shadows working journalists and champions of independent media as they work to make--and keep--their societies free in Afghanistan, Israel, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Sierra Leone, and the U.

Themes: independent media, media censorship, international press, and the role of journalism in democracy.



SHADYA by Roy Westler and Udi Kalinsky
Screening November 15, 2006

Shadya, a 17-year-old Muslim girl, Israeli citizen and World Karate Champion fights to win her independence from the traditional life expected by her community.



Themes: women in sports, youth empowerment, identity, Arab-Israeli experience.



TWISTED by Laurel Chiten
Screening Dec. 5, 2006

TWISTED follows the stories of people with Dystonia, a rare neurological disorder that forces muscles to involuntarily contract and twist.



Themes: disability, healthcare, education on disabilities.



HIP HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes by Byron Hurt
Screening Jan. 9, 2007

Hip-hop is a politically charged music born from explosive frustration in the South Bronx.

How did this urgent political message of hip-hop transform into the gangbanging, drug-lording, misogynistic gangster rap that dominates urban radio today? And how did gangster rap become the predominant voice of black masculinity?

Themes: Hip-hop, media consolidation, youth culture, media and society, objectification of women.





RACE TO EXECUTION by Rachel Lyon and Jim Lopes
Screening Feb. 13, 2007

RACE TO EXECUTION explores how the media's racially charged portrayal of victims and perpetrators is internalized by potential jurors and carried into the courtroom. Themes: Race and the death penalty, the death penalty, judicial system, media bias.





BLACK GOLD by Marc Francis and Nick Francis
Screening March 13, 2007

BLACK GOLD is a moving and eye-opening look into the 55 billion dollar global coffee industry, where the spoils of overprices lattes and cappuccinos are sparsely shared with the farmers who make it all possible.

Themes: fair trade, WTO, coffee, Ethiopian coffee, famine in Ethiopia, globalization.



SENTENCED HOME by Nicole Newnham and David Grabias
Screening April 10, 2007

Raised as Americans in inner-city projects near Seattle, three young Cambodian men are deported back to Cambodia, they find themselves caught between a tragic past and an uncertain future by a system that doesn't offer any second chances.



Themes: deportation, Cambodian American experience, immigration rights, and enforcement of immigration law.
