After a successful fund raiser, the museum ended its fund drive with over $150,000 which resulted in the museum turning its first profit since it was created. The International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky was just . The Pete Seeger Vega banjo that was used by Seeger during protest rallies for more than 15 years during the '60s and early '70s was donated to the museum during the trustees meeting Sunday, November 4, 2006.
The recent fundraiser began when a pledge was made for $25,000. The conditions of the matching funds stipulated that the museum needed to raise twice the ammount in one night from out-of-state donations. In the same vein as the Video Oral History Project (VOHP), another promise was made to help fund another new program for the museum.
Radio Bluegrass International is to launch by mid 2007 as an Internet based entertainment radio channel. The $25,000 grant from the Marilyn and William Young Foundation must be used soley for the Internet station. With so much positive energy and activity surrounding the museum, there are more high-hopes that will fuel additional programs and insure the survival of existing programs.
The museum is a draw from bluegrass artists and fans that also benefits the Owensboro community. The International Bluegrass Music Museum is off to a great start in its short history.
