NEW LOCAL: Music acts coming to area for benefit Natefest concert

Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 10:20:31 GMT Last-Modified: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 10:20:31 GMT It was a little over a year ago, he said. I couldn t lift up my drumstick.
For years, Baird had been a fixture of the area s music scene, drumming for bands like Edge of Existence and Broken Remain.

Music was one of my main passions, he said.
Even though Baird hasn t performed music since, music hasn t forgotten about him. This weekend, several bands from the area, as well as some from Chicago and Indianapolis, are assembling to perform in a benefit for Baird.

Natefest 2006 will take place Saturday at The Wedge in Austintown. Among the bands performing will be Gwen Stacy from Indianapolis, Mirror from Chicago, Tilt 360, Relic, Seconds Before Burning, Silence Before Daybreak, Once Nothing, Neocracy, Belie My Burial and Craving Gore.
The show will begin at 5 p.

m. and is an all-ages show.
Rick Moyer, who is booking the show, describes most of the bands as hardcore/metal, more like As I Lay Dying or Norma Jean -style of music.

I picked the best of the best in Tri-State area, he said.
Baird has a personal stake in the bands, calling himself a fan of most of them and a friend of members of She s in Pain and Tilt 360.
Baird also has been friends with Moyer for years.

We met at a show, St. Valentine Day s Massacre at the South New Castle Borough Firehall, Moyer said. They ve stayed friends since, with Baird playing for Moyer s various shows over the years.

Moyer even helped Baird s band, Broken Remain, get a demo recorded at Mud Hut studios in Sharon.
The idea for the show began this summer, after Baird was diagnosed with the disease and a brain tumor in July. The original plan was for the show to take place at Baird s home in Portersville.

When the weather became colder, according to Baird, the show moved to The Wedge in Austintown.
Although Moyer works mostly with hardcore, grindcore and metal acts, he is excited to be working at the Wedge, where more mainstream rock bands like Breaking Benjamin have performed. It s the perfect venue for any genre of music, he said.

Because of the cost of booking the show at The Wedge, as well as bringing in artists from places like Indianapolis and Chicago, Moyer has relied on donations and sponsorships to fund the show. Because of this, he hopes that 95 percent of the ticket proceeds will go toward Baird s medical expenses.
Variety of duties, flex hours, part time to start.
