LOUDQUIETLOUD: A FILM ABOUT THE PIXIES (unrated). During the late 1980s and early '90s, the indie-rock band Pixies (they never used the "the") released five albums of brilliant and utterly original music with an arresting style that provides the title of this modest documentary. Pixies gained a cult following before splitting up acrimoniously in 1992.
But since then they've developed an outsize reputation as one of the most important bands of the last 20 years. (After writing the grunge anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Nirvana's Kurt Cobain confessed, "Basically, I was ripping off the Pixies.") In 2004, the band unexpectedly reunited and found itself playing to some of the largest and most ecstatic audiences of its career.
This is a nice Cinderella story, but here's the problem: It doesn't exactly crackle with drama. And while the four Pixies are legendarily weird characters - especially the enigmatic singer, Charles Thompson, and the now-sober bassist, Kim Deal - they remain stubbornly private.
