Authorities don't suspect foul play in the house fire early yesterday that killed a Uniondale woman, fire officials in Nassau County said. The woman, whose identity was withheld pending family notification, was home alone when the 2:50 a.m.
fire broke out at her Laclede Avenue residence, fire officials said. After spotting thick smoke, officers on routine patrol were the first to reach the home and ran inside to search for anyone who may have been trapped, said Vincent McManus, division supervisor of the Nassau County fire marshal's office. "They made a really good effort," McManus said, adding that the house was already engulfed when the officers reached it.
One officer reached the second floor, but was driven back by intense heat and smoke, McManus said. The fire originated in a second-floor bedroom, where the woman's body was later discovered after flames were extinguished, he said. The fire investigation is ongoing, but Nassau County's Arson Squad reported yesterday that the blaze doesn't appear to be suspicious.
