Tickets to the show are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the show. "We've lived with these songs for a while now and they're very precious to us, so releasing this EP kind of feels like we're sending our kids off into the world. It was important to us to have the DVD feature as well because we're, first and foremost, a live band. We want people who are being introduced to us for the first time to have some idea of the live experience," commented Christina. Although she's a classically trained violinist, it's for her vocal talents that 23-year old phenom Courtin is causing a stir in the New York music scene. As an instrument, Courtin's elastic voice stretches and contorts into seemingly impossible sonic shapes, drawing comparisons to '60s icons like Terry Reid and Robert Plant. In live performance, Courtin can deliver utterly beautiful ballads one moment and invoke Janis Joplin the next, segueing seamlessly from one to the other. Together with her equally masterful band The Running Kicks guitarist Sanna and percussionist Ma! thias Kunzli Courtin, who attended New York's prestigious Juilliard School on full scholarship, blends blues, soul and rock with elements of jazz and classical music to produce a mesmerizing live experience. A singer-songwriter in the grand tradition of the Young New York Songstress, Courtin has a few extra tricks up her sleeve. She has a vocal chutzpah that instantly disarms an audience. She forsakes the solo act, in favor of playing with a full band including guitar, percussion, stand-up bass and, on occasion, violin, which she's been playing since age 3. She has an uninhibited performance style, which Time Out New York describes as "a fearlessness that most vocalists reserve for the shower." Her songs are peppered with her wry humor. And while she can deliver mid-tempo ballads like the best of 'em, can also rock out. (Mozart is a major influence, as is Led Zeppelin). Together with her masterful band, The Running Kicks, genre- hops from blues to soul to rock, blending in elements of jazz and classical music. Guitarist Sanna and percussionist Mathias Kunzli's intricate musical flourishes adorn Christina's self- penned songs on subjects like break-ups, discarded photographs, winter months, soap and blue collar men. The three met through mutual musician friends in 2004 and soon discovered they were musical soul- mates. They gelled together rapidly as a live band and started developing their devout New York following at their earliest shows. In the two years since, the Kicks have sold out nearly every show they've played, including at venues such as Joe's Pub, The Cutting Room, Makor, Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction, Rockwood Hall, the Knitting Factory, Nublu, Pianos, The Living Room, and others. Christina, a Buffalo, NY native, is a graduate of New York City's Juilliard School, where she studied classical viol! in on full scholarship. Originally from Oregon, is also a member of Baby Monster and a prolific composer for theater and film. Swiss- born Mathias has been a New Yorker since 2001. He's a much sought- after percussionist who plays with Rashanim, Pharaoh's Daughter and many other bands.
