The poll struck a chord with Age readers, with 37,000 sparking passionate debate.
Speaking from London, Crowded House's Neil Finn recalled how Melbourne inspired the writing of the winning album, Kilda, rehearsed in South Melbourne, and mostly recorded in South Yarra and Caulfield.
Some of those lyrics first dawned on me as I Finn, a New Zealander, said Crowded House was a proud Melbourne band, and he lamented that its drummer, the late Paul Hester, was the town we chose to return to. It's forever deeply ingrained in musical moments," he said, before leaving open the possibility of a Hester-less band reunion.
"Being in a great band is a rare and precious thing.
Would it be asking too much to think it might come my way again? I wonder."

The winning song, Under the Milky Way, may have been written by Sydney band the Church, but it was claimed by Melburnians as their own during the Commonwealth Games, when the fish sculptures danced to it on the Yarra each night.
The song's author, Steve Kilbey, said he was very excited that Bash at St Kilda's Prince Bandroom on Friday.
