A historic fall for Cain cross country

The E.V. Cain sixth and seventh grade boys cross country team won the first league title in school history earlier this month.

Jeffrey Gail tagged his team as underdogs, from their unprecedented youth to their nagging injuries. The E.V.

Cain cross country team faced a formidable four-time champion at the Foothill Intermediate Schools Athletic League championships earlier this month.

The stage was set for a monumental upset. And after the Wildcats pulled it off, Gail believes the future of cross country in Auburn is bright.



The E.V. Cain sixth and seventh grade boys claimed the first FISAL banner in school history, led by individual champion Christian Finkbeiner.



The team's leader is the son of renowned endurance runner Bill Finkbeiner. Teammate Austin Twietmeyer is the son of five-time Western States Endurance Run champion Tim Twietmeyer.

"They were the shining squad this year," Gail said.

"Of the 14 on the team, four are seventh graders. Most of them are running against kids a year older, a year bigger. Add to that the injuries they were running with and I don't know how much more Cinderella you can get.
