"No Refunds" was also released on DVD this summer. "This is the biggest thing I ve ever done," said Punk Rock Stand Up creator Dan Crohn, host of Wednesday s showcase. "It s my biggest name by far.
" Crohn first caught Stanhope s stand-up last year at the Boston Comedy Festival. Despite his fame, Stanhope has maintained a dedication to small venues and DIY operators. After a brief e-mail negotiation a few months ago, Stanhope agreed to perform at the 75-capacity O Brien s.
"I was floored," Crohn said. "But he loves to do little pubs all across America." Though Stanhope has local roots, he might want to curb one bit that caused a ruckus at Ireland s Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival last year.
The comic caused a minor uproar when he made a vulgar quip about Irish women. It ended up in a headline in the following morning s Irish Daily Star. His performance was cut short 10 minutes in, and the rest of his appearances at the festival were canceled.
If he makes it out of O Brien s alive, he ll be back. Stanhope returns to the area for a gig at the Abbey Lounge in Somerville on Oct. 21.
