A STRING of special guests have been lined up for a tribute concert celebrating the life and work of Celtic music star Martyn Bennett. Top of the bill will be Martyn's band Cuillin, with Finlay MacDonald and Fraser Fifield on pipes and Greg Lawson on fiddle. The Broughton Music School Orchestra will perform a specially-written piece, and also appearing will be DJ Dolphin Boy Phil Bancroft, Bill Wells, Laura MacDonald, Flying Fiddles and the Porridge Men.
Mr Bennett, who died aged 33 in 2005 after a four-year battle with cancer, pioneered a fusion of traditional folk with house, hip-hop and dance music. Cuillin played in a Paris bar before Scotland's 1998 World Cup match against Brazil when Sir Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor and Kenny Dalglish joined them on stage. The concert for the Martyn Bennet Trust, set up to encourage young musical talent, will take place on October 27 at the Queen's Hall.
